Hospital Hygiene Department The Institute for Hygiene and Public Health provides advice on hospital hygiene not only to the clinic of the University Bonn but also to a large number of other medical establishments not associated with the clinic (acute hospitals of maximum medical care, small hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, doctors' practices etc.).

The services of the Hospital Hygiene Department include advice, hygiene inspection and participation in hygiene commission meetings as well as supporting the creation of hygiene plans and also scientific accompaniment of the surveillance of nosocomial infections, which has been legally mandatory since 2001. Additionally, outbreak management and involvement in epidemic alarms and disaster prevention plans make up a large part of the department's activities.

Furthermore, all investigations to do with hospital hygiene and regarding hygiene technology (inspecting RLT systems, heat exchange plants, autoclaves, thermodisinfection, endoscopes, disinfectant dosing apparatuses, compressed air etc.) and microbiological hygiene (environmental investigations, MRSA screening, molecular biological typing etc.) are performed.

Hospital hygiene fulfils important functions in terms of quality management in the hospital and is significantly involved in the implementation of, among other things, infection protection law, medical devices law and the biological agents ordinance.
